Course curriculum

Reading and Listening Skills

Students will be able to read and understand common expressions, short notices, and simple everyday texts in German. Listening skills will include understanding basic conversations, greetings, and announcements in real-life contexts — a core requirement of the Goethe A1 Hören (listening) section.

Practical Communication

By the end of this beginner German class, students will be able to converse confidently in basic situations such as introductions, shopping, asking for directions, making simple requests, and handling everyday classroom or workplace conversations. This course fully prepares students for the Goethe A1 exam's Sprechen (speaking) component, including the self-introduction and question-card exercises.

Teaching Methods

Doitsu – The German Language Institute uses a mix of live instructor-led classes, practice sheets, speaking labs, and role-play exercises. This ensures every skill — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — is taught in an engaging, practical way, rather than through rote memorization alone.

Pass Marks for Goethe A1 (Start Deutsch 1)

To pass the Goethe A1 exam, students must achieve at least 60 out of 100 total points, with no minimum score required in any individual section — a strong performance in one section can balance a weaker one in another.

Total raw points: 60 (scaled to 100) | Passing score: 60 out of 100 (60%) Grading: 90–100 Sehr gut · 80–89 Gut · 70–79 Befriedigend · 60–69 Ausreichend

Written sections — Hören, Lesen, Schreiben — are conducted together in one sitting; Sprechen is a separate group speaking exam of up to 4 candidates.
